The medical world has to be on the cutting edge of technology and traceability, since everyone’s health is in their hands. In today’s case, we were challenged to create a custom laser marking system with Cobot for surgical inserts.
The company in question needed to mark titanium inserts for surgical instruments with the support of a Cobot.
The marking phase had to be simultaneous with the deburring phase, which is managed by another machine. In this way, the Cobot would be able to interact with both machines at the same time.
The solution proposed by SIC Marking was composed of many elements: an i104 Easy laser marking head with customized chassis, a Cobot moving on a slide with linear roller guides and 3 delivery chutes for the unloaded marked parts.
The laser marking system marked alphanumeric codes and symbols at 4 different points on each insert (4.5 – 4.8 mm) + 360° marking on the thinnest part of certain types of inserts (1.1 – 1.4 mm). All inserts are made of nitrided steel.
When the deburring machine finishes its cycle on a component, it calls the Cobot which has to retrieve the part, clean it thanks to a system of blowing nozzles and temporarily place it in a dedicated tray.
Next, the Cobot takes a new part from the same tray and places it in the deburring machine. At this point, the Cobot returns to the start, picks up the insert previously placed in the tray and takes it to the laser marking machine.
The part is marked at 4 points and then the Cobot unloads it for the operator to retrieve.
